Discovering Dad: Do's and Don'ts of Complimenting Your Wife on Mother's Day

  • cory huff · 1 year ago
Awesome, Jeremy. I tell my wife I love her all the time, and says, "That's so sweet. What do you love about me?" Specifics, guys. That's what wins the points?
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
Yes Cory, specifics are definitely key!

    How about...

Do: Would you prefer I barebque or we all go out to celebrate?
    Don't: When's dinner?

    Good phrasing Stewart.

Great post...all very true. I do have one exception though, at least in our house. Comparing to the mother is OK, as long as its a positive for your wife. Example: "Your hummus is so much better than your mom's". My wife is Middle Eastern, so maybe its cultural, but she seems to really like that.

Its true too. It's really good. Just the right amount of red pepper. Great, now I'm stuck in the office and starving.

Every situation is different Matt. I love hummus too!

    Excellent tips Jeremy..
Please tell Lori I hope she enjoys her Mother's Day!!

    Here is one:
DO: Compliment her efforts of working out to get in shape.
DON"T: Hold up the Shape magazine she was reading and say "WOW, she only had a baby three months ago"

    You will be kicked.

Shape magazine is evil Kim. Definitely keep it away from all men. I'll tell her - thanks! Happy Mother's Day to you too!

It's amazing how an unfortunate word choice changes everything. I've stepped on that landmine plenty of times.

How do you think I learned these things - smarts? It was from first hand experience!

Absolutely spot on! Good for you. You must be a great husband.

Dead on. I'm impressed. I don't think guys understand that they can never compliment their wife too much. It's always best to err on the side of frequency.

Anything hand made, however mangled, does it for me.
And a tray of stone cold toast cut wonkily with marmite an inch thick is also good.
I have come to accept that having some time to myself won't happen and that's OK - I'd rather hang out with ds and dh anyway!
Nice bath with candles in the evening scores highly as does coming downstairs wrapped in warm towels and finding dh's speciality chilli supper on the table.

don't set too much store by it - Mother's Day if you are both a mother and have a mother is always going to be is bit disappointing if you want to be pampered and do exactly as you want.

Bliss for me is escaping to a coffee shop with the paper for an afternoon on my own - but that's not fair on the DSs who want to "do things" for ...
