  • Zoeyjane · 1 year ago
my daughter has a bedroom. i have a living room. i think hers is much cooler than mine - though i do have a computer and bigger tv.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
You're a good mommy Zoeyjane! Nice of you to put your daughter first!
  • Zoeyjane · 1 year ago
oh, i think it's important to mention that giving her the bedroom meant she slept sounder. so really? it was ALL FOR ME. muahaha.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
Sounds like a mutually beneficial situation to me ;-)

What a girly room Caitlin has! I think you are setting her up to be either a Diva or a proncess though - better watch out! Great pictures, and it is wonderful to see Caitlin at home and hopefully sleeping for you...I know how a lack of sleep can effect the whole family!
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
I have learned to exist in a state of constant sleep deprivation, and if I'm really tired, I can just walk into Caitlin's room and the blast of pink is enough to wake anyone up. Hopefully, when we actually get her into the room, it won't keep her awake ;-)

Our guest room and the baby room ( http://www.justinrummel.com/News/article/sid=21... ) is better than ours... our the oldest boy is in queue to get an upgrade before we even think of touching our room. Sad truth.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
You're right - it is a sad truth, but it feels good doing for the kids before doing for ourselves, doesn't it?
  • Justin · 1 year ago
It will always be kids before us. ;-)
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
    Part of being a parent!
  • kel · 1 year ago
Yes...it's funny how that works. But it's true, there are so many other things I would rather spend the money on than that...then again look at it like this...if you are still using your wifes old furniture, perhaps you are investing in your childrens 'adult' furniture now?! hehe

That's right kel! If we don't get rid of it by the time the kids leave, then one of them will be forced to TAKE IT! ;-)

Good looking room! Really cute and comfy looking.
I have to resist the urge to make a joke here about how lame our bedroom is compared to my daughters, because its not. Her room is great and all, but our bedroom is really cool. Its the one place in the house that is ours and ours only, if you know what I mean, so we decided a while ago we were going to make it kind of a sanctuary for ourselves.*

*My wife will slightly disagree due to the coat rack, I mean Soloflex, that has lived quietly in the corner for the last two years. But other than that, its pretty slick.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
Some day, Matt, some day we will build our sanctuary too ;-)

Great job. We moved into our new house in February and still haven't done any of the bedrooms. I was planning to start every weekend over the past couple of months. Hasn't happened yet.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
Our old house was like that Jason - we never could get motivated to do anything to it. White walls for years. We've been a little more motivated over the past 4 years in this house though, and I've got to say that it is nice having the rooms done! I hate painting!

I love the Chani's classy room.. great job!! and the baby's room is so adorable!!! And I look at how big Ty's bed is.. looks bigger than mine.. hahah Love it.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
Chani seems to really like her room too. She's 14 now, and her room used to be a mish-mash of Little Mermaid and Pooh with little kid furniture. Part of me wishes that she would have stayed that little girl, but I'm proud of the young lady she is becoming and we were happy to give her a classy room! Yes, we were thinking long term with Ty's bed - we don't want to have to buy another one for a long while.

Our kids have better rooms than us decoration wise...theirs at least has a theme. But their furniture has been a hodge-podge of hand-me downs or cheap finds at a garage sale (or Pottery Barn outlet clearance section). Our furniture is awesome as I said when we built our house I was getting new furniture, but sadly the decorations/bedding is not up to par. Some day....however, now My oldest son has stated he wants to change his room as he is now 11 & doesn't want firetrucks, police cars, & construction gear as the theme...guess I don't blame him. His room is painted RED though....any ideas on how to paint over it???
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
I'd get some Kilz. Caitlin's room was Ty's old nursery, and it was painted dark green on the bottom and light blue on top (like a ball field). I was dumb and just tried to paint directly over the green with the Fuschia for Caitlin. I ended up having to do like 6 coats to cover it up. Then, I got some Kilz for the trim, and it worked in 2 coats. Definitely can't blame him for wanting a room change - hard to know what a pre-teen will like in a few years though.

Ty's got a great bed! I should post a picture of the contraption that Michael bunks in. I built it myself out of framing lumber. He likes it though. Our room is a hodge-podge of antiques and leftovers. Maybe just before we kick over we'll get new furniture, like after Michael moves out. Love all the pink in Caitlin's room!
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
I'd love to see the bed you made Tom! I'm sure it's more special when you make something yourself. Hodge-podge must be the name of most parents decorating theme ;-)

Do my kids have a nicer bedroom than me??

Well, I sleep on a matress on the floor. No boxspring, no bedframe, nothing. So...I think YES.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
I remember those days too Luna! It's good to hear so many parents that put their kids first :-)

When my monkeys were younger BPB's room had a sports theme and one wall painted bright green to match his comforter. IN fact, he still uses that blankets sometimes. BBB had a train theme going and he still uses his blanket as well. The pics in his room went from baseball stars to girls about 2 yrs ago.

Luckily, my daughter still likes the pig prints and keeps her posters confined to the back of doors and closets. That way I don't have to stress about looking at boys in her room every time I walk by ;-)
  • Mr Lady · 1 year ago
No, but they do have a grotesquely better wardrobes.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
I hear that too Mr Lady! Caitlin could never wear the same outfit twice for the next 6 months, and Chani has a wardrobe that rivals Lori's for sure (although Lori has more designer stuff). Ty's closet is packed, and my closet is well sparse.

Don't give up on having a better bedroom than the kids. The wife and I have been able to locate and acquire some VERY nice stuff at near prices that if I told you what I paid, you would never believe me, through craigslist. Craigslist is amazing and we buy much of the kid's stuff used (not all, but most of it). Usually in great condition and we end up selling it used for the same price we bought it for. We also use freecycle a ton as well. Doing this, we have found having kids is not putting us in the poorhouse while we still find money to splurge on us.
  • jnbammer · 1 year ago
I've heard of freecycle, but I've never done it. I've used Craigslist for other things, but perhaps I should keep an eye out for a few things. Thanks!

I'd say that our kids do (or will) have about the same level of room as the wife and I. Their rooms definitely look better than ours! You did a great job on her room! It's such a great feeling know that your kids have a comfortable and fun room to retreat to at the end of the day.
